....MOVING FROM SCIENCE TO DEVELOPMENT...

Invitation to participate in the World Congress "Biotechnology 2000" to be held at Berlin, Germany

It is generally agreed that the newly started century will be the century of Biotechnology. During the last decades, all the molecular techniques necessary to understand the structure and function of living cells were established and proven to be extremely successful. It is now possible to sequence the genomes of pro- and eukaryotic organisms. Using bioinformatics, the location of genes can be identified and in many cases their function can be predicted. At the same time, powerful methods were established to analyse proteins and to understand their roles in metabolic and regulatory networks. Finally, genetic engineering can be used to modify the genetic capacity of living cells, leading to interesting applications in medicine, agriculture and industry. There is really a tremendous amount of new knowledge on the molecular level of life sciences.

The World Congress "Biotechnology 2000" to be held 3-8 September at Berlin has therefore taken up this topic and expressed it in its motto "The Molecular Key for Biotechnology". The World Congress really covers all aspects of modern biotechnology. It is organized in eight sections dealing with Molecular Tools, Cellular Tools, Applied Genome Research, Health Care, Agriculture and Food, Environmental Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering Science and Processes, and finally Biotechnology and Society. Each of the sections will be introduced by an outstanding scientist presenting a plenary lecture. Invited lecturers from industry and academia will give overviews about the current "hot topics" in each section.

It is of interest to notice that the World Congress "Biotechnology 2000" sponsored by IUPAC, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, will host

  • the 4th Congress on Molecular Medicine, the international conference series of the various Berlin institutes on Molecular Medicine
  • the 2nd European Congress on Applied Genome Research organized by the AGR Section of the European Federation of Biotechnology
  • the 1st European Congress on Agri-Biotechnology organized by a newly founded section of the European Federation of Biotechnology and
  • the 18th DECHEMA Annual Meeting on Biotechnology, the largest and most important biotechnology event in Germany.

Participants of the World Congress "Biotechnology 2000" are invited to present their latest research in Biotechnology in an oral or poster presentation, to discuss their views with distinguished authors, to obtain new ideas and to exchange their results in informal settings.

Participants will not only enjoy the outstanding scientific programme of this meeting but also experience the fascinating city of Berlin – the most exciting and rapidly changing place in Germany in the heart of Europe. They may participate in scientific excursions to technical landmarks, science parks etc. as well as guided tours to cultural attractions.

On behalf of the sponsor of this World Congress, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) I am looking forward to welcoming the readers of the Electronic Journal of Biotechnology in September 2000 in Berlin!
